Buildings
Citadel
The Citadel is the building of the Defensive line dynasty and takes the place of the Walls: when a seat of this dynasty goes to build Walls, the Citadel enters the queue. It carries all four of the Walls' effects; its HP and repair are higher.
Its effects
- City HP +16
- City defense +3
- City vision +1
- Turn-start city repair +3
For comparison, the Walls' effects (Walls):
- City HP +10
- City defense +3
- City vision +1
- Turn-start city repair +2
The Citadel's defense contribution to the city is 3, the Walls' is 3; the vision contribution is 1 for the Citadel and 1 for the Walls. The difference is in HP, repair and cost: the Citadel adds 16 HP (Walls 10), adds 3 HP to the turn-start repair (Walls 2) and comes to 10 production (Walls 8).
The dynasty's own repair effect stacks on top of the Citadel: a Defensive city with a Citadel repairs 6 HP at the start of the turn (Defensive line). A city under siege still does not repair (Cities and population).
What taking the Walls' place means
- The choice is not yours, it is the dynasty's. Under the Defensive line, when you put Walls in the queue, a Citadel is what gets written to the queue; Walls cannot be built separately.
- Same slot. The Citadel spends one slot; a city holds at most 3 buildings (The production queue).
- The technology lock comes from the Walls. No node unlocks the Citadel separately; without knowing the node that unlocks the Walls, the Citadel cannot be built either.
- A city cannot hold both. The Citadel and the Walls are two faces of the same building: in a city that comes with a conquest and has Walls standing, a Citadel cannot be built; the Walls stay as they are and keep their effect.
- A building that comes with a conquest works on its own data. Another dynasty's Citadel is kept in a city you capture as well.
When to build it
The criteria for building Walls apply to the Citadel too: border cities, the capital, and any city you expect to be besieged more than once. When you see a rival producing a Siege, the Citadel also lengthens the number of turns a siege needs and buys you time to answer.
